...get in order to weather whatever the temperatures are during that time of year. I know that you Chicagoans have winters that tend to be harsher than most, and I wonder if your falls are particularly chilly? What kind of "fall wear" (is that a thing?) should I make sure I bring. I am visiting for just 5 days to run some errands pertaining to my upcoming move to the city.
Thanks for the help!

Check the weather before you come. Nobody knows now what the weather will be then. Then bring clothes that you are comfortable in at those temperatures. It's not rocket science. Right now temperatures are about 10 degrees lower than they normally this time in September. Last week things were a bit warmer than normal. It would be a good idea to bring clothes you can layer, but you're not preparing for a polar expedition.

LAYERS!!!!

November probably has among the widest variation in daily temperatures. If we are lucky and get a surge of warm air from the Gulf of Mexico or SW temps could be in the upper 60s and only a light jacket is needed. School kids will walk to school in basketball shorts.

If we are unlucky and frigid air spills down from the Arctic and Canada we could see temps below 32.

You will need to anticipate these things and bring a variety of things that can be LAYERED -- cotton sweaters, pullovers, jackets made of "synthetic fleece". Trousers of a mid-weight fabrics as well as maybe something heavier for men like corduroy. Women tend to like tights of various weights, maybe even wool if things are going to be chilly.

And we can get rain / ice / snow -- footwear that is appropriate probably means something more 'athletic' than "catwalk / runway". And water repellent. Salt KILLS suede!

Hats, GLOVES, scarves are easy to pack and if you don't have them you will regret it!

You could wear shorts and a parka on the same day. Last year on Halloween it snowed like crazy. Other years it has been hot. Mostly it's cold and rainy on Halloween.
