Hi All,

My husband and I are moving to Chicago. We're considering the following suburbs. If there are any suburbs we should consider, please feel free to chime in.

- Berwyn, IL
- Oak Park, IL
- Cicero, IL

We don't need a massive house. Here are some of the items on our list:

- 1500-2000 Sq Ft
- Decent Kitchen
- 2 Car Garage
- Convenient location
- LGBTQ friendly
- Not TOO suburban

Any insights and advice are highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Left Chicago almost 20 years ago, but I would only consider Oak Park of the three you have mentioned.

Oak Park is wonderful, Berwyn a decent starter home place, wouldn't recommend Cicero.

Oak Park is an ethnically and racially diverse community. It's known for its socially liberal politics.

It probably offers the best transportation choices of any suburb in the Chicago area. Oak Park is closely connected to Chicago with CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) access via the Green Line and Blue Line L trains. The CTA also offers bus service in Oak Park. There is a Metra/West Line (commuter rail system) station in Oak Park's downtown. And, Pace (suburban bus service) also operates bus lines in the community.

Another transportation option in Oak Park is the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290), which traverses the community east-west.

The most glaring downside to residing in Oak Park is the property tax. I have read that an annual property tax bill in the 3% range can be common there.

Welcome to Chicago.

Oak Park over Berwyn over Cicero

Nearby La Grange Brookfield River Grove

Depends where you will be working to take Metra BNSF line to downtown

Where are you moving from? Chicagoland in general is pretty lgbtq friendly. My wife and I have lived in berwyn and oak park, and we bought our home nearby in Elmwood park. Your budget may dictate where you end up, depending on what type of home you’re looking for. Of the towns you mentioned, Oak Park is the priciest but also the area with the most amenities locally. I’d love to talk further!

Thank you all for your input! This is really helpful.

I'll be working from home but my husband will be commuting to downtown Chicago.

@OPRFmama We're moving from Texas. I've never been to Chicago so I have no idea what to expect. Any guidance will be appreciated. It's just the two of us and our two small dogs so we don't want or need a massive house. Our budget is around 400k so Oak Park may be out of our reach.

Hi Guys...welcome to Chicago. I'm gay as well. Happy Pride to you both!

I used to reside in Forest Park IL. Moved there in 2019. Though I was born & raised in Chicago (city), In 2008, I moved to Florida. I resided there for almost 11 years and decided to move back home in 2019.

I now reside in Cicero, IL. I also work from home. It has many stores nearby and it's fairly close to Berwyn and Oak Park. Though Oak Park can be pricier.

I enjoy the area.
