Does youtube consume a lot of mobile data? I would like to play some music (android app) while on long distance driving (from one hour trip to multiple hours trip). Radio is boring too.

Never forget that if cell service is unreliable or unavailable where you travel to, no music.

Drop the video resolution down to the minimum and it looks like YT is less than 100MB per hour according to this site https://www.bandwidthplace.com/artic...ify-vs-youtube

Usually, if there is 5 minute video, it takes less than one minute to stream the data (grey bar process completed within one minute), I don't think it is streaming data all the time at the "same" rate.

The numbers in the linked article are most likely averages. YouTube usage is very spiky to avoid buffering.

Why not just download the music and listen to it offline? If you are going to listen to music that way, I would think that some of the streaming music services would be more practical. Though personally I don't even bother with that. I just listen to my own downloaded music.

I just tried a 15 minutes trip, there is a lot of ads which cause "interruption".

Secondly, I am not sure if youtube will be idle after some time, youtube auto-pause feature pauses videos after PC inactivity. Not sure if youtube android app will pause when driving on long trip.

But that is what averages are. It takes that into account.
What WRM20 said is your best bet. Have you considered psending a few $$ on a Spotify or Apple Music account?

I pay for the ad-free version. On my Android, YT does not stop. I use the YT Music app.

If you're using the free version of YouTube Music, then you'll get ads, and every few songs the player will stop completely, requiring that you click on/touch the player to continue.

If you don't want halts in your enjoyment, you have to pay for it.
