But there is a cost to those riches, for the residents of the area and workers. Lithium mining is hazardous to people and the environment, though the current administration pushing EVs doesn't seem to recognize it. Maybe because most of it comes from Australia, Chile and China.

Is this really that great of a thing for the average locals?
I could see service suppliers like gas stations and a few stores getting a benefit, Joe Schmo not so much.
If they were going to mine for that in my neighborhood I’d be gone.
I just don’t think it would be healthy or environmentally friendly.

On the surface this may seem like a boon for the southern Coachella Valley and northern Imperial Valley, but it could end up being fools gold. If there's no value-added secondary processing of the lithium in the region such as battery production, how can the region truly benefit? Besides, lithium mining is not too eco-friendly. Who knows, Slab City may have an economic base after all.

Would they still be using arsenic to extract the lithium?

Wanna "kill" an organic farm? Use lithium based grease on your tractor. Yup, it's that toxic.

I have fond memories of walking on the solid mass of fish skeletons on the beach. CRUNCH. Smelled awesome, too!
