Maybe if you're buying a fully loaded Mitsubishi or a Hyundai.

Most people should understand that Mini's are BMW's, which means that they cost more. Most people don't go around buying the "poverty spec" level car from a luxury brand, and then ***** because they aren't as nice as the ones that the rich people pay more money for.

That is way to personal of a response to the simple observation that the Mini countrymen lacks considerably less power than a Toyota corolla. The rental was very cute, but I was surprised when I entered a freeway.

I am still a little surprised at the anger of some of these responses. As far as I knew the least powerful German cars sold in America were these VW poverty spec models featuring a stingy, 158-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
  • VW Jetta Starting MSRP $20,665
  • VW Taos Starting MSRP $24,155

I was just surprised to rent a German car with an even stingier 134-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine.

Most people are less impressed with a diffusion label than you are, I suspect. The Hyundai Kona outsells the Mini brand by 3:1... one not particularly popular model. I don't really think there's anything wrong with 134 HP. Mini is basically a city car brand which those don't really need to waggle the HP stick. Still, the Hyundai isn't pushing ten years old so much less outdated than Mini products, for 30k it comes with non-anemic 1.6 turbo that makes 196 HP rather than 134 HP like some Chevy Trax rental job. It would be fine if the basic Minis were low 20k like a Chevy Trax is, but in the real world BMW has pushed the price of them up at a rapid rate. it's a diffusion label and at a time BMW has supply chain issues they're just not that interested in selling them.

I am not sure what a diffusion label would be.

However, I see that I was unfamiliar with MINI, They have been selling vehicles with very tiny standard engines since they introduced the brand to the US in 2002
  • 2002 MINI Cooper Specs & Features 1.6 liter (MSRP $16,300)
  • Horsepower 115 hp @ 6,000 rpm
  • Torque 110 lb-ft @ 4,500 rpm

The Mini Cooper engine was even smaller than the Miata engine in 2002
2002 MX-5 Miata Convertible 2D Specs & Features 1.8 liter (MSRP $7,483)
2002 Mazda Miata I-4; 142-hp; 125 lb-ft torque

Correct term would have been diffusion line. Levi's sells the "Signature by Levi's" line of jeans for half the price of regular ones though Walmart and other low-end retailers. While there's not BMW products on the UKL1, the UKL1 and UKL2 were developed at the same time by BMW for the FWD 2-series (hatchback and Goupe in 2014 and X1 in 2015). Then they did the diffusion line Mini placements in 2015 and 2016 and sold them at a lower price like Levi's does with Signature by Levi's through Mini.

But yeah, the nature of it being a diffusion means they do need to also be objectively inferior as is the case with Minis. My favorite diffusion line is of course Patrick Cox the defunct British designer loafer maker. They flooded the market with, wait for it, Wannabe (not kidding) branded loafers. And by flooded I mean flooded like 100-1 Wannabes to Patrick Cox. Love that British humor.

Thanks for the new term.

I guess this engine is much older than I thought.
The 2014 Mini Cooper hardtop comes with a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.

Tested: 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop: Three cylinders, manual transmission, thirty grand. BY ALEXANDER STOKLOSA PUBLISHED: DEC 2, 2014
