It's crazy how many Red Sox hats or shirts we see on a daily basis along our stretch of beaches known as the Emerald Coast. Several years ago, it was very rare to see a Sox sighting. Now, it's several times a day! The Nation is everywhere. Just yesterday, we were in an antique store and picked up a magazine .... guess what's on the cover ....
So, as a fellow member of the Nation, we are wondering from you Sox fans out there, have you noticed much advertising for our area? It seems that people are finding out about our little secret paradise and we are curious how.
How do you spell the proliferation of Red Sox hats?

You do have a point .... however we must honestly say that most all of them we've met, have been true fans .... every now and then you see a Red Sox hat, make a comment, and they look at you like you have 2 heads ....
Yeah, fair-weather fans come out of the woodwork when a team does well--hello, Patriots "fans", there's no denying that. But do you know how hard it is to get a ticket to Fenway? Every game there since May 2003 has sold out. 400 or so regular season games. It's cheaper to fly to Florida (hell, maybe even Japan) to catch a game than it is to see the boys at home. The Sox fans are neck and neck with the Yankee fans as the most well travelled. Chip's just upset because when the Sox take the show on the road to "Fenway South" for another 9 or 10 "home" games, there aren't any seats left for the hundred or so O's fans who show up. Don't just hate on the Sox. The Yankee fans also buy up a lot of tickets, too.

I totally agree. Be wary of the pink Red Sox hat!! There are too many "fans" out there that couldn't name a single pitcher beyond Beckett, Dice-K and maybe Papelbon...
I'd guess that quite a few of these are bandwagon fans, but probably not all of them. Lots of transplants in Florida. Any time one of their teams plays a team from the Northeast or Midwest, it seems you hear as many cheers for the visiting team as for the Florida team, because of the number of people at the game who are now Florida residents but are originally from the visiting team's turf. I'd guess that some of these Sox fans are genuine fans who are transplants from New England. Probably not all of them, however. Bandwagon fans are everywhere, whoever the latest successful team happens to be.
No bandwagon fan here. I been a die hard Red Sox fan since 1967. If any of you Sox fans are old enough, do you remember "The Impossible Dream" ? Anyone have the album narrated by Ken Coleman? I still do.
I never lived in Boston or anywhere in New England. I did drive the 8 or so hour drive to Fenway from New Jersey many many times. They sucked many of those years through the 70s. One day Dwight Evans walked up to me and shook my hand before a game.
I can remember going to 2 of the final games of the 1967 season. We lost that year to the Cards in 7 I think it was. But I remember that great team better then I remember the 2004 team.
Yaz, Rico Petrocelli, Jerry Adair, Lonborg, Tony C and Reggie Smith. At the time I memorized every statistic of every player.
I hated the Yankees as much then as I do now. I guess I hate ol George more then the team though. Its tough growing up in the NY NJ area being a Red Sox fan, I can tell ya that.

I'm just curious about how you ever became a Sox fan. Dad or uncles from New England?
I remember '67, but I was a little young to really be following things. I've sometimes regretted that I wasn't a little older at the time, with all I've heard about the magical feeling that captured the fans. Would've been nice to have been really following things so I could have appreciated that. I mostly just got caught up in the excitement of the last few days of the season, when the pennant race went down to the last game, and then the Series. Here's another name for you: George Scott.
I'd rate them as better in the '70's than you're giving them. They seemed to be perpetually finishing second in their division. Not quite serious championship contenders, but I wound't say they "sucked." Then there was that one year they played in one of the greatest World Series ever, in '75. That was their first Series appearance after I was old enough to be a true fan. Great times.

Hey, it must've been a thrill to meet Dewey.
Of all the things I remember I have no idea how I became a Sox fan while living in the middle of The 69 Miracle Mets era and among those nasty Yankee fans. I think I was just starting to like baseball with no bias towards the home team.
I bet it was the greatness of Yaz that caught my eye and the close ending of the season where I think it was a half game divided the top 4 teams the final days of the season. I loved the Sox ever since.
You mentioned 75. I remember 67 more....why? I will try....... Lois Tiant with the strange delivery and the cigar, Lee, Drago and Burton. Fisk was a favorite of all fans. Never a clutch hitter but a pretty good one. Rice and Lynn were outfield with Dwight Evans who came over to shake my hand before a game.
Soon maybe into the mid 70s I started liking basketball and football. So I also been a Pats fan and a die hard Celtics fan for all these years. What the hell did the Cs do tonight? Its pretty hard when you have to beat a team and the refs. But the way those bums were shooting tonight they could have beaten the 95-96 Chicago Bulls on Jordons best night of his life.
