I don't think those are mature trees, they are young trees, and mostly birch with what I think are a few fir trees mixed in. What you find really varies with location, even locally. I think birch are one of the first tree species to grow in after a clear-cut, so that area was probably cleared not that long ago and this is what has grown in since then, would be my guess.

I am curious if that is a river floodplain, if it is then those might be fiddlehead ferns.
