I am going to move soon.

I wonder how early in advance to tell USPS for change of address and mail forwarding? In other words, how long does USPS take to actually forward mails from my old address to my new one after I tell them to do so?

Does it take effect after the same length of time when doing it on USPS website and doing it in the local office?

My current post office is the one in hampden。

Thanks!

I can't generalize, but when I moved out of 20902, it was very fast. I had mail forwarded to the new place in 4-5 days. My husband did not trust the post-card and so he did it on the web-site. I can't tell which was faster.

You can complete the form online now, and, then list the date for the mail to be forwarded in the near future, i.e., August 1. I completed my form online last year, and, requested them to start forwarding my mail a few days in advance of the timeframe I was to move in to my new apartment, just to be safe. Everything worked out fine, mail was there by the time I arrived.

In my experience in Baltimore, (having moved a few times to different neighborhoods), some post offices are a bit more efficient than others--give yourself a few days wiggle room and you'll be fine.

Also be aware that sometimes the sorter (computer) doesn't always get it right. There were a few times when a very important document wasn't forwarded (but the vast majority of mail was btw). Luckily, I 'lived' at both places for an extended period and was able to recover it.

Just curious are you moving to another area of Baltimore? Or out?

It took almost 2 months for USPS in Baltimore City (the Pennsylvania Ave post office) to process my request to forward mail. TWO MONTHS they had my mail just sitting around somewhere (because I was only moving from Baltimore Co., not Siberia, as you might think). I called about it and it was just a casual, "Oh, sorry, sometimes we get a little backed up…"

But technically, they say it should only take 2-3 days to begin receiving forwarded mail, but I guess it depends some on where you're moving and how far away it is. I actually go the Hampden post office sometimes, only about a 5 min drive up 83, and I find they're a bit more competent and tend to have more staff than my post office or other's closer by.

We'll be moving in 2 weeks. When should we enter a change of address?

You select the exact date you'd like the mail to begin going to your new address instead of the old. Just look at usps.com
