I drove a Saturn for 8 years and it looked as good when I sold it as when I bought it. The plastic is cosmetic only. If your car had been metal you would have had to replace the side panel and door panel as they would have been buckled.
I had a friend push another against a car and it buckled at a seam which made repairing it costly. If they had hit my Saturn that way it would have bounced back into shape. Car maker won't go the Saturn way as it doen't make them as much money in the long run. I love Toyota's as I've had two with over 200,000 miles and no major problems. I sold them because they started to rust out. If Saturn was as reliable they'd go out of business as no one would need new cars.
