Thanks for all the adivce, folks. We're now trying to decide if it really was mice or ground squirrels. There was a empty box in the truck where my husband used to keep tow straps. It was heaped full of acorns, and even more were piled around it. Same with the glove box - full of acorns. And yes, it is parked under an oak tree.
My suggestion was to sell the car. We've been here for a year and a half and he's put only a few miles on the darned thing. That'd be one or two trips a month into town (20 miles round trip) and once a week, a mile-and-a-haf round trip to get the paper. If we figure up what it's cost us, it'd be about $3.00 a mile. Could rent a car for that.

It's a lot better than putting them in super glue, a few minutes is better than a few days.
Snap traps are designed to sever the spinal cord or break the neck... or even crush the head. The snap trap would have to be of exceptionally poor quality to not deliver a blow strong enough to kill the animal instantaneously.
i just love the snap trap it is instant litesout when the mouse is in the rite position.but i stopped feeling sorry for em when i got up one morning poured a bowel or raisen brand...it tasted funny i put my glesses on and it was corn flakes!!!!!!!i thought the raisens here small...
All i know is when we used to have snap traps set, you'd hear the trap go off, then run in to find the mouse with it's legs kicking for a few seconds....
ya in our motor home.its war.most of the time the adult schull is crushed..smaller mice its the neck crush.babbies ya they get the lung crusher heart smasher spine breaker. if u dont think these traps have power do what i like to do and go for a finger smasher.oh ya bone side up oh man i got to go try it now.just talking bout it ....ill be back in a sec...
I 'm almost sure that we either have mice inside of our van or that they built a nest under the hood and can get inside the car from there. The car remain outside we live in North Carolina. Today on the dash I found what looks just like mice droppings. I had thought this a month ago because we went home for Christmas to Michigan. In the way back of our van a regular family passenger I sat a box with Christmas gifts. I also sat a laudry basket that had snacks in it and other things we took with us to eat in the car. We stayed in hotel rooms and we used the box to put the gifts we got in it. After Christmas we left the box and basket in the car and didn't bring it into any hotel rooms. When we got back I found droppings both in the basket and box and also on the floor of the back of the van. I thought that mabe one of the hotel rooms had mice. I hadn't seen any signs of mice in the house and we have a garage but do not keep the car in there and I put decon in the garage in the Fall. I have heard of people who had rodents build nest in the engine or whatever. How can you get rid of them and what damage to the car could they do. I'm gross out
As mentioned in the other mouse thread, when I opened the engine hood on one of my older cars the other day to install a new master cylinder, there was a mouse under there. He/she ran into a hole around where the fender meets the fenderwell. Hopefully it gets out before i start driving it regularly again.
Have you had this problem before? What is the best way to combat this problem..They chewed thur our new Dodge 2500 control panel and cost a lot of $$ to fix..not a warranty coverage..
