Above is the BMW 3 series available in 1983. In response, GM took a Chevy Cavalier and plastered it with Cadillac badges. Overall, they were both of similar size. The BMW was front engine and rear drive while the Cimarron was front engine and drive. The base engine of the Cimarron was less than 90hp. It was later years that Cadillac seemed to flesh out the Cimarron but by then it was too late and still not of the same quality of BMW and MB entry level vehicles.
The video above is a review and comparison of the 82 & 83 Cadillac Cimarron. The top BMW video is a recent retro review release so I thought I would share these two videos to compare side by side.
The Cavillac was a disaster and so was the follow up Opel based Catera. The only home run Cadillac ever had rebadging another car/suv of theirs was the Tahoe/Suburban morphed into the "Escalade!"
That guy John is still reviewing cars (yet he is bigger and balder). I love seeing the old reviews.
I've owned both. I had an 84 BMW 318 and an 86 Cimarron. They both sucked. The BMW had electrical gremlins that I swear started the day the warranty was over and the Caddy was tarted up garbage. It had a nice interior and the V6 had plenty of power, but it was always in the shop for something.

The next generation BMWs were much improved (1984-85 was the new 3 series, video shows the old 83).
I always loved the 325is with a manual transmission, even better than the M3 of that generation (it was cool looking though). BMW refresh in 1992 was disappointing.
Back in 1984 I had a Crapalier company car for just under a year. Nothing real major broke, but when I got it all four speakers worked and when I handed it back only one of the four worked. Typical 70s/80s GM product - everything loose and floppy. Putting leather seats and different shocks on it and calling it a Cadillac didn't change its essential crappiness.
I can't speak to a similar generation 3 series BMW but they HAD to be better than the Crapalier.

I had an 84 Buick Skyhawk with the 2.0L & 4 speed manual. Only problems I encountered was a stuck thermostat causing engine to overheat (was smart enough to pull over and turn off engine when temp light turned on and having to replace clutch (1989) as it was the car I learned to drive manual transmission on and I was the second owner. The Buick and Oldsmobile J-body dashboard was a much better design over the Cavalier design used by Cadillac. I liked that 2.0L engine over the 1.8L OHC engine.
