What is the craziest driveability problem you have encountered with a bad or failing MAF?

I had kind of the opposite issue. In 2011 my 1994 Olds failed an emission test. The repair was replacing the MAFs ($700, had to be done at a shop, not DIY :-(

For the first few days after, I was "burning rubber" from stop lights and signs due to restoration of power I had not noticed had decreased over the years. Gas mileage improved also.

As always, YMMV ;-)

Car wouldn't start. In the late 80s and 90s, Mitsubishi put a lot logic through the MAF.

Wouldn’t call it crazy at all, but I had a dirty MAF in a free Toyota. It ran way lean and took out the car because of it, it also topped out at around 60mph.

Being that I wasn’t into spending money on that car, I cleaned it using brake parts cleaner. Had to do it every year or so because of the residue it would leave, you could almost watch, month by month, how the fuel trims would change, and even after I had just cleaned it, the fuel trims weren’t great anyway.

The car I drive now uses a MAP sensor instead. Speed-density systems are, I guess, considered less flexible than mass-air, but so far it has acquitted itself quite well.

Depends. Factory speed-density is usually considered less flexible, but many aftermarket ECU setups run Speed Density as well and run quite well with modifications. Of course, that's with tuning.

Just a check engine light with no noticeable effect.

all the maf does is reference a volume of air. based on TPS and IAT and baro, its a quick calculation so as long as the range is CLOSE it wont throw a code, but it can cause bad economy, especially if the IAT is part of the MAF now - like the GM 3.6 engines...I have a long writeup of the solution on the Cadillac forums I can hunt up if needed

Dunno about that side of it. All the modifieds I ever had were carbureted, never tried to mess with aftermarket EFI, but that is interesting. My impression was that speed density was kinda...limited on its own, unless you wanted to manually tune, and I think maybe that’s what you’re saying?
