Yep, they are very strict about oil changes. People think they can go 10k miles between oil changes and then when something goes wrong they expect the warranty to cover it. Hyundai/Kia clearly states in the manual that oil changes should be at 7500 mile intervals, and "severe use" at 3750 mile intervals.

People also get upset when the 10/100k powertrain warranty doesn't cover something like a CV joint or alternator, but it's not supposed to. The powertrain warranty only covers the internally lubricated parts of the engine and transmission.

Look at the Tiguan for a small SUV. The vehicle can be had for less than $24,000 with more options and features than any other vehicle out there. Plus all wheel drive at that price. Lower if you opt for two wheel drive.

This pricing won't last as soon as the diesel scandal fades. And then you will own a high quality vehicle whose price is likely to remain firm as demand outstrips supply.
Last VW I had, had a warranty of 36,000 miles. At 36,100 it died. Bad fuel injector, normally a $1300 repair goodwill repair for free. When I realized there were 3 more injectors that pony would have to fit the bill for I drove the repaired Passat to a japanese car dealer and traded it in.

So no. I would drive a VW but only lease until the warranty expired.

I would look at a Rav4.

Also, may want to look at the cost of the extended warranty since the person is going to buy one. I would price it online because they are often cheaper than from the dealer selling the car.
