It might be Wanaka itself. But, if someone fell in love with Wanaka , Queenstown, Te Anau etc what community within an hour's drive of those three is best-geared for full-time, year-round residency? Each of the above seem absolutely wonderful, but also seem very touristy, which might make for suboptimal conditions for permanent residents. Cromwell didn't seem very big, and there are other towns I did not visit. Are there any communities within reach of the above three that offer enough to permanent residents to be viable options? Are those three themselves options? Thanks!

If you rule out those three towns for being too touristy, and think Cromwell is too small, that really only leaves Alexandra ... which would be my pick anyway, just for being a town that isn't full of city imports/work from home types trying to live the "simple life" but really just creating a mini Auckland vibe.

Cromwell would be second. Te Anau is okay, but a bit too quiet and too far from skiing imo. Wanaka and Queenstown best left for a day or night out.

Well, I wouldn’t necessarily rule those out! I loved them honestly. I’m just not sure about the realism in building a permanent life there. If it is doable, I’d prefer to make it work there. Alexandra looks like a place I needed to visit when I was there last week.

Hawea township, it is located on the shores of lake Hawea about 15mins from Wanaka. it is a much quieter place than Wanaka but is smaller than Cromwell.
Another town is Clyde near Alexandra, more charming than Alexandra.
