Why do you want one?

The inspection itself will be cheap; the remediation, expensive. The hit to your property value because you must disclose the inspection when you sell, very expensive.

They do sell home kits at the hardware store, though. Maybe try one of those first, before you go down that road..

They have them at Home Depot too. They recommend getting 2 kits - one to test indoor air quality and one for the outdoor - so they can compare and see if your indoor has more than the outdoor. I didn't read all the info but I think it said that you send the samples into a lab and that probably will cost $25 each.

have a friend buying a home in an area that's known to have had mold issues in the past and he'd like to get a report from the seller without it costing an arm n leg

This is a link to the Texas Department of State Health Services that handles the licensing of Mold Assessment Consultants (MAC) and Mold Assessment Technicians (MAT) who can run tests for mold. It also has lists of licensed remediation companies. Mold Program Home Page There is a list function for all current licensees there. You can call a few for their pricing.

The cost of testing varies from a MAT to a MAC from from one MAT to another and one MAC to another. I would however recommend that if you have more than a few square feet of mold in the home that you use a MAC instead of a MAT. A MAT can only test for the presence of mold but a MAC can not only test for mold but can write, monitor and clear any remediation plan required. MAC's are not required to use test results from a MAT and might require their own tests. Why pay twice?
