What's the lizard that's about 8" long and has a head that looks like a hybrid between an iguana and a horny toad? Usually a brownish color. Those are rampant at my house.
According to one of our 'bugs-n-bunnies' guys, that is a Texas Spiney Lizard. We have one that has lived at our house for years (outside, of course!).

Welcome to Texas. If you or your children handle any of the lizards, be sure to wash your hands well afterwards. All reptiles carry the possibility of salmonella. I love having the lizards around and think they're interesting little creatures to watch. When I moved here, we had horned toads. I miss those. I believe the imported fire ants got them, or at least their baby offspring.

Welcome to Texas!

Insofar as the weather, well, no place is perfect! Better than snow and ice!

You'll get used to the critters here. Weirdest one I ever encountered was a foot long slug! I was coming down the steps one morning and saw something gray, thought it was a shadow or puddle, it moved a bit, was a foot long gray-slimy-shiny-weird looking thing! With some sort of feelers or antenea or something. It took up the whole step! I went back inside to get my husband to kill it (that's the man thing, kill stuff, right?) well, by the time he got there whatever it was had left. But I swear it was there! I looked it up and near as I can tell it was a giant slug, but everything's bigger in Texas!

Again, welcome to Texas, you will enjoy!

I've also heard that. They're funny to watch, though. They hop like a bunny when they try to run fast.

They do. That is why it is illegal to own them as pets. My daughter wanted one when we moved to Austin. But I looked them up and found that they do in fact carry leprosy. Not all of them carry the disease, but a good number do. It sucks because I heard that they do make good pets. But then leprosy sucks even more right?
