Both of my boys (9 and 12) love basketball. I know Texas is a football state, but hey. This was solidified in our recent tours of middle and high schools where ALL of the students we met knew about the football team intimately, but when asked about the basketball team we got a lot of "huh?", "what?", "er...ah...I don't really know", "I think they're OK" kinda answers.

But my boys are built for basketball, they love it, are good at it, and their parents (us) are fervent college basketball fans. So, both of them are on what we here call "travel" teams -- local teams apart from the normal recreation leagues that are made up of the best players from rec leagues, and they stay together year round and play in organized leagues with other travel teams around the region. I see that Westlake has this, but can't find it anywhere in the areas we are interested in moving to. Can anyone answer:

1) Do the existing recreational leagues (Lake Travis, Steiner Stars, other?) feed into any travel teams in the area?
2) If yes, what league are they affiliated with and where can I find them on the internet?
3) If no, are kids interested in this (i.e. if I started one up)?
4) Are there any open gymnasiums in the area that allow open basketball play for this or other purposes?
5) Are there any adult leagues and where are they played?

Many thanks!

Orion, I posted a bunch of info about recreational basketball leagues for youths and adults about a week or two ago...as well as some other folks. I don't know if this translates into traveling leagues or not, but it might work as an initial inquiry point.

https://www.city-data.com/forum/austi...ght=basketball

if you search Austin Parks' website there is some info about rec leagues in Austin as well.

Thanks Gigi; I totally missed that thread. I've been all around the websites (Austin, WYBA, NWAYB, etc etc) but haven't yet seen anything about these specific areas. There's GOT to be something ... I just haven't found it ... unless of course it really is all about football over there!

I haven't seen anything about basketball in River Place specifically. Over here, it seems to be all about tennis, golf and swimming. I know tennis is really big in Lakeway as well.

My neighbor plays in informal adult basketball here 3x a week in RP and I originally asked him about leagues in this part of town, and all he knew about was the stuff going on at Lifetime Fitness.

Speaking of Lifetime Fitness, is there any low-key workout facility (cardio equipment, some weights, maybe a gym) within 15 min or so from your area or Steiner? I know of Wild Basin Fitness, but this seems foofy and pricey; I for one don't want "help" when I'm working out ...

Helena's Day Spa offers a $40 month to month membership at the Mansions right in Steiner Ranch. This includes an indoor pool and whirlpool, and heated spa room. The cardio room has a decent view of the lake too.

Orion, you can join River Place country club, as well. It's very reasonable, and you don't need to be a resident to be a member of the club. There are a surprising # of people from Steiner, Westminster Glen, and Long Canyon who are members. Our gym is very basic and small, nothing fancy, very low key and everyone is there to SWEAT and not pose and that's what I like about it. There's a good set of weights, weight machines, treadmills, ellipticals and bikes. A lot of good fitness classes as well (tons of men are in the spinning classes).

If you want some info about the club pricing, PM me and I can give you the details.

Skyhawks Sports Academy is part of the Summer Camps this year, and they have a basketball camp for 6-12 year olds. You can get more info at www.steinerranchhoa.org

Default Adult BBall In Lakeway/Bee Cave area

I know at least 50 guys between the ages of 16 and 57 who would like to find a local gym (in a church, school, etc.) in this area to play bball a couple nights a week, and/or on weekends. We just haven't found a place to play. We were playing at the Lakeway Church until they decided to convert the gym for children's education. They will not be building another gym for several years. I and most of the other guys can't wait that long. We are gaining weight and losing fitness.

Please e-mail or call me at 608-9393 if you know of a place, or are playing somewhere that we could play. I am not looking to drive all the way in to Slaughter and Manchaca to play ball, as I work in Horseshoe Bay.

Thanks!

Eric Winter
