Got the shock of a lifetime - husband laid off after 21 years with the same company. Must sell out here in Central Florida. I'm south Texas born & raised. Husband looking at early retirement - he's 59. Always loved the hill country. Want something sort of rural, close enough to medical facilities, fishing, and with a LOW cost of living. Anybody got any suggestions? Would be SO grateful for the help. This is a bad time for us.

You might want to consider Burnet County, with the Highland Lakes nearby. Or Kerrville.

My Dad moved to Meadowlakes (beside Marble Falls) years ago after looking all around Central Texas. In fact several of my relatives have retired to Meadowlakes and like the gaited community with easy access to surrounding big cities.

How rural do you have in mind? Do you want a small town, do you want some acres?

TexasHorseLady...we would like just a few acres. We have 2 large, frisky dogs, and need a small workshop and an outbuilding. A small house on a few acres with no deed restrictions would be ideal. We've had enough of paying HOA fees and being told what we can/cannot do with our own property!

Western Travis county, outside the Austin city limits, near Lake Travis.... You can still buy some "space" to live at a reasonable price.

Two major medical care facilities under construction in the area now.

Burnet county and Lake Buchanan is very nice, but medical care is lacking.
