As T-Horselady said, I would talk to the neighbor but spin it so it sounds like you're concerned for the cats health.

The more I think about this, the more I think that it is unlikely that the poop belongs to a cat! As others have said, cats bury their poop. You are more likely to find cat poop in a flowerbed.

Could it be some lazy person walking their dog? Or just letting their dog out to go? (My kooky neighbor just opens the door and lets their big dog run about -- no fences -- to do his business. Great dog, terrible owner).

Anyway, I would take a closer look at the dogs in your area. Maybe set up a video sting. Or just put up a sign, asking dog walkers to pick up after their dogs.

As was mentioned, very unusual behavior for a cat. You might have a cat of a 'different color', namely a polecat, visiting you at night or even possibly another nocturnal creature.

We thought we had a cat pooping in our back yard, but it turns out it was a neighborhood possum. If a cat is distressed enough to poop out in the open, it is probably about dead.

Possums or raccoons can be a problem -- also a good way you might be able to approach the cat problem (if it is indeed the cat). Tell your neighbor you've got a problem with possums or racoons, and you are going to have to put some traps out (use the humane traps). You might catch your possum, or the neighbors cat. You can just release the cat, but it will have learned it's lesson and probably won't come back for awhile.

Have you tried spreading mothballs around? Cats hate the smell--assuming it is a cat. I agree with the other posters, I think its unlikely its a cat, cats bury their waste. or you might try catching the animal "in the act" and spraying it with the hose, cats hate water.

LOL, I don't think I'd want to spray a polecat (skunk) with water.

Ok, that's something to consider! If you're sure its a cat!

I am a cat lover, have many of my own, they're my furbabies. I wouldn't want anyone to hurt my furbabies! But I've used the water hose a few times, keeps them away from areas I don't want them in. No, I really would think about spraying a skunk!
