Our builder offers a TechShield radiant barrier which they claim can reduce elec bills by up to 17%. Cost about $1500.

Has anyone gotten this? What are the real-world energy savings with this in Austin area?

I cannot speak to TechShield specifically but we have a radiant barrier in our house -- it was put in by the builder as part of the green builder program. I would check with Austin Energy for their stats about how much a radiant barrier reduces electric bills.

It definitely keeps the attic space and the ducts much cooler. Before this house we lived in a 1950s 1000 sq ft house, we more than doubled the sq footage in our new house but our electric bills stayed the same! But for us the radiant barrier was just a part of a whole package of energy efficiency items (6 inches of insulation in walls and ceiling, low-E windows, well-designed ducts). When we buy another house (probably older, the first thing we will do is put in an radiant barrier.

You need to make sure that the attic is also well vented and that the HVAC system is carefully designed and sealed.
