Vote NO on ACC District Prop A-this is not the same as Prop A for affordable housing-vote YES on that one!

Austin Community college waste

Reasons to vote no:

-A 1 million dollar contract to a company to organize labeling of rooms and create directories.

-Goal of centralizing classes leaving outlying areas to offer not many classes to students. Centralizing purpose not necessary or desirable or consistent with community college goals in general.

-Creating too many upper level manager positions with bigger salaries causing many areas to under employ needed staff and leave area very low staffed. Extra upper level management has not helped ACC organization and may be related to cronyism.

-Instead of creating new facilities, areas at EVC and NRG that were vacated in moves to HLC could be used to expand departments.

-Thousands of dollars wasted on unnecessary audiovisual equipment: too many projectors per room in RGC. Unneeded digital signage for every building to show event info.

-Overbuying Technology equipment to “spend the money”. A couple years later giving away unused, new, boxed technology to warehouse surplus.

-Thousands of dollars of flowers and landscaping allowed to die and be thrown away due to not being planted in time.

I'm assuming this is what the OP is talking about?

https://sites.austincc.edu/2022-bond/

I have no opinion but think on any issue, both sides should be addressed.

Well if you live in Austin and are a registered voter you should have an opinion because it’s on the ballot in less than a month.

I’m assuming there is something in there for affordable housing, as well, because I see the signs near all the foundation communities properties.

Why is that? A ballot could have 20 different things to vote on. That doesn't mean you have to have an opinion of every one or couldn't be indifferent to some.

It’s about being informed. You can be indifferent, but at the end of the day, you need to know what you’re voting on. Like your username says, can’t blame anyone but yourself if you don’t vote.

And if you're indifferent about something, than there's no reason to vote on it. That doesn't mean you're not informed. I'm not sure why that's so hard for you to understand. I seldom vote for every single issue or person on a ballot (and I'm not blaming anyone if I don't).

But in the end, who truly knows what we are voting on? Literally all the bond says is "we're planning on spending some money in these general areas and any other areas that we can make it sound like it's related".

IMHO, that's the problem with these bonds and politics in general, it's all about the loosey goosey notion of "intent", the bond signifies an intent. Problem is, there isn't squat written into the bond about "definition of success". How do we, the poor folks who are paying for the bond, measure how effective the bond was at achieving it's goals. Heck, there aren't any actual goals, just intent.

Imagine any other service that one might personally spend their money on where the only criteria you had to judge is intent and not the final outcome .

Affordable housing is a gimmick. The real problem is lack of inventory. Government policing a few homes to be more affordable only puts upward pressure on the majority of homes as inventory is further reduced from ordinary buyers, including the majority of those who need affordable homes as they usually do not qualify for the programs.

Austin would do much better in relaxing the processes it takes to get new housing developments approved. More housing inventory = less housing demand = more buyers in all fields of work are capable of purchasing.

Nothing is “affordable” when no one enters the “affordable” system. There are horror stories out there in my world where there are people who have HACA housing vouchers, but even with no criminal background or credit concerns they can’t find an apartment or house. It takes years to get the voucher and then people can’t even find a home even when they have the support. Section 8 is a state/federal issue, so that’s beyond the scope of Austin “affordability” but anything that can happen to increase the number of units available helps. And clearly, I’m in the minority here.
