You didn’t say what type of work you do. Get the job before moving here. Don’t move here thinking you’ll walk into a professional job within days. That’s not how the market works. You’ll need to answer the other questions for us to help. Could you move here without your son? If he’s enrolled and doing well in college? And again, WHY Austin?

My last apt that I rented in Austin before moving out 15 years ago was renting out at $600 a month for 422 sq ft. The same apt rents out for a mind numbing $1,300 now! My house that I own and live in Bel Aire, Kansas next to Wichita is $900 a month and it includes house insurance and property tax (property tax is $1,500 a year) and I have 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 2 living rooms, 1 full kitchen and a full basement on 1/4th of an acre in a nice town with very low crime. I've been trying to convince my wife to move up to Austin since her graphic design job has basically been maxed out in income ($80k basically) and won't get any increases unless everyone in the city gets a cost of living increase...basically every 2-5 years. My friend who lives in Austin and has relocated remotely to Florida has said he thinks my wife would make a lot more in Austin but that means more increased cost of living so....but the pros of living there outweights the cons on some days..lol.

graphic design is remote these days. She could work for a silicon valley company and you can live in the same place.

She knows but she refuses to leave a government job due to her disability. She's deaf and so am I. The thing is she's been there 20 years. She also has IBS issues and due to her longevity at her job, she has a doctor's exemption. I highly doubt she would get that if she went for a job that wasn't a governmental job. It's the IBS she has the most worry about.
