If you travel, you'll need a Real ID to get through TSA, board a plane, and enter most federal buildings and courthouses.

If you move out of state, you'll need to get a new drivers' license anyway, so that hassle would exist regardless of your Real ID status. Get one!

Have fun taking a whole new driving test. That's what happened to my sister who moved here recently from out of state with an expired license (DL office was closed in her state due to COVID). Her spouse, whose license hadn't expired, was issued a new one without issue.

Fun fact: You get the same DL number if you move away and come back.

I’ve left Texas and returned 3 times and have my original number.

Cool. I was surprised and pleased cause mine was easy to remember.

Of course there was a time you had to write it on checks.

I memorized my DLN back in the early 80s - not sure I could forget even if I wanted to

When I moved to Seattle, my GA license was deactivated but I didn't have to surrender the physical card.

When I moved back to GA, I renewed my license and got the same # - I also remember my DL license number by heart.. ..My license plates are a different story though.

Yes, you'll need to get a new license, and it'll be a PITA. But your gold starred, TSA approved Texas Real ID driver license won't count for identification when you go to get the new one in some states.... and that's just stupid.
