While its easy to get caught up in all the "wag the dog" weather news we get round here, I actually enjoy a good storm, we know we allways need rain, but I wondered if anyone could clarify something for me.
When I grew up (way back when) a Tornado WARNING was just that, a CONFIRMED- Tornado on the ground. A Tornado WATCH was to prepare to take shelter as weather indicated strong possibility of Tornados..
When did the distinction get so blurred? I cant tell you the number of tornado "warnings" we've been through in 9 years yet theres been just one in our area confirmed on the ground with some damage..

Old Version:
Tornado Watch---strong indications of the possibility of Tornados in the area
Tornado WARNING---A Tornado has been confirmed on the ground in you're area -TAKE COVER (in the basement )

New Version:
Tornado Watch---strong indications of the possibility of Tornados in the area
Tornado WARNING ---Strong indications of the possible likelyhood of tornadic type activity suggesting probability of a real Tornado... Take cover NOW

Cheers

I like the second senario...depending on computer models rather than on a person who happens to spot the tornado heading my way!

The warnings are now based on doppler radar and visual sightings. You can't always predicts 100% with the doppler if a twister will form but they figure better safe than sorry. Give them another 10 years and they'll be callin your house with reverse 911.

Is it really "better safe than sorry" or is it "keep them scared so they tune in"?

Cheers

I agree with you, Driftwood...they almost seemed disappointed this year when we didn't get a huge ice storm.

Tornados are the only thing I want them to stay on top of...I guess the Jarrell tornados that we watched pass over our house and hit Cedar Park gave me a dose of reality. Seriously, we saw the big debris cloud as it hit the Albertson's!
