Hi,
We are planning a visit to Austin and San Antonio and would like to stay somewhere in between the 2 cities. Looking at what is available on VRBO and Airbnb, I was wondering if San Marcos or New Braunfels are good options for saving money on a place to stay while we explore Austin and San Antonio?
Please share any positives or negatives about these towns?

Stay in San Marcos then you can go to the outlet malls and Schlitterbahn isn't too far. I wouldn't stay in New Braunfels the Schlitterbahn crowds can be rowdy at the Airbnb's near the park.

Stay at Canyon Lake. Thats what we did when we stayed in the area before moving here. Its scenic, beautiful, and theres a huge lake.

A good halfway point between San Antonio and Austin is The Outlet malls at Centerpoint Road and I-35, Exit 200. That is 28 miles to Exit 172 at 1604 and I-35 in Far North San Antonio and 28 miles to Wm Cannon and I-35, Exit 228, in Far South Austin. There are some nice new hotels near the outlet malls. There's a new La Quinta Inn just east of the mall on Centerpoint Road that looks real nice. There's a couple of others in that area but their names escape me at the moment.

It just got a little more complicated with those apartments burning down. Very sad for the victims.

New Braunfels would most likely be your best choice. A lot of water activities there in NB. San Marcos is nice as well but NB would be my choice. Just more to do in the place you are staying.
