Simply put, I'm thinking of relocating to Texas in 2018

What are the Pros and Cons of living in Austin?

Background: Solo Female in her mid-30’s, Currently working in the finance department at a large law firm but I’ve also worked at large investment companies so I’m flexible as in my finance career.

Cheers,
K

Why Austin?

Cons: most expensive housing and rental market in Texas, long summers (May-October), traffic congestion, the legal community is pretty insular and not as big as in Houston and Dallas, not as many big investment firms as other cities as well.

Where are you coming from and what are you looking for?

Find a job first and then move to where that job is.

Interesting to choose the state; but not a specific location. BIG state with varying weather patterns...that would be a prime consideration for me right after employment opportunities.

So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly. Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars.

Pros: The Lake/River with the city in the background makes a great backdrop for beautiful sunsets.
Pretty strong economy with fairly good employment, but competitive.
It's on every 10 Best list in the country. Obviously the epicenter of everything wonderful.
Great slogan, "Keep Austin Weird".
Traffic is not as bad as old timers make it out to be.
Over 100 people a day move here and it is a diverse and cool city.

Cons: Flash flooding or Drought - not much in between.
Hotter than the surface of the sun August - October.
It's on every 10 Best list in the country. Obviously the epicenter of everything wonderful.
Slogan is fake, should read "Keep Austin Commercialized."
Due to lack of planning over the last 40 years, traffic will soon be worse than the old timers can imagine.
Over 100 people a day move here.

If you want more in-depth advice about an area/city within Texas that may be a good match for you, the kind people on the forum need a little more to go on. What do you like. What is a deal breaker? What is the desired living conditions (apt, house, tent under a bridge...?)

The Austin legal community is insular. Our finance people are based out of the larger cities. Unless there is some compelling reason, I'd try Dallas or Houston

I used to live in DFW area a few years ago and I liked it but it SNOWED!! I'm moving from Boston and I just can't do the weather anymore. I generally liked living in Texas and the heat doesn't bother me.

It's snows occasionally in Austin too. Just did mere days ago. We also get ice storms and freezing rain and sleet. It's not going to get above 39 degrees today. If you're looking to avoid winter weather, maybe you should look at Southern California or Phoenix.

This, then decide what you want to do in your spare time (beach, city, outdoorsy, etc). It's all available in Texas, but not necessarily close.
