That’s a strange reaction to someone not falling in lockstep with your opinion.

The only thing that annoys me is the assumption that any and every young person would prefer to live there over the other Texas cities, when the fact of the matter is that a lot of us just don't fit in very well in Austin.

No, the OP is simply getting called out for his yin-yanging.

Fair enough. Just as long as I am not living next to you.

Houston is a lovely city and it has a thriving downtown urban scene, wth. It's far bigger than Austin's. The Galleria, Downtown, Montrose/that area by the Medical Centers...I also like Dallas too. And let me not forget mi amor San Antonio. I like Austin because of its smaller size, not because it one ups any of the other Texas cities. I didn't want to live in a large city since I came from a large city.

IMO, I like all of the Texas cities. They're each different and enjoyable in their own way.

Yeah, it seems like people believe there is some rule that you can only like one city, and there is only one RIGHT city, or one city is definitely the BEST and if you disagree you are missing something important.

This doesn't mean that there is nothing fun to do in Houston or there aren't any lucrative career opportunities in Austin, as it seems that people are primarily driven to move to Austin for its festive lifestyle, where people are more inclined to move to Houston for career opportunities.

For example, unless you are visiting family or going to a sporting event, nobody picks Houston off the map as a vacation destination like Austin. With that being said, I believe that on this forum, there is lot of resentment for the dreamers who haphazardly flock to Austin from other parts of the country, and scrounge to get by from Uber or waiting tables, just so they can have the opportunity of live in Austin. Am I correct?

For my wife and I, I am in education and she is in international business. We were thinking that if it is unrealistic to move to Austin, then maybe Houston as a fall back option. To me, where Houston is nowhere near as exciting as Austin. But, Houston may be the ideal place for someone to live if they just want a nice steady job and a nice suburban home to come back to.
Nothing wrong with Houston- probably just as much or more to do there. Its just not it's reputation. But how many "Entertainment Districts" does a person need really? In the old days, a person got by with a corner bar.

I don't know Houston that well, but I know some people who have moved back and forth between Austin and Houston a couple times, and they don't seem to be lacking for entertainment. They usually go back to Houston for the better job.

Plus, you get Pro Sports.

Deep Ellum would be the closest to a more NOLA/Austin vibe, especially along Elm St. Tons of bars & music venues all within walking distance. Nice rooftop views of Downtown as well.

McKinney Ave. Uptown:

Lower Greenville & Oak Lawn also have their own nightlife strips with plenty of places to walk to.

Dallas also has all of the big city amenities that Houston has -- pro sports, cultural amenities, museums, etc. Hands down, the most diversified economy in the state of TX.
Tend to agree- I like Dallas and the surrounding areas. It seems to get a bad wrap. I'd probably live there over Houston.

The thing that Austin that can't be denied and always gets pumped up is the entertainment districts and bar areas that are pretty cool. But at some point in a persons life- who freaking cares? I'm 40 years old...... 50 years old.... with a family. The bar down the street works just fine. I'd say in your 20s- Austin rocks, but after that....... the big cities offer more.

And that's an excellent point. Here is a serious question for all the Austinites. Considering all the problems Austin is facing with traffic congestion, over population and increase in housing cost, do you feel the majority of the people who are flocking to Austin are doing so more for entertainment reasons, whereas people who move from elsewhere to Houston are primarily career driven?

Except the elderly remain in Houston to be near our stellar med Center. If you need a specialist ,(and you hope you never do), with a little research you can find some of the best in the world in Houston. As people age, often primo medical access outweighs flood concerns.
