We like the Threadgills on Lamar, go there once a month for the music brunch. The food is very average but the music and coffee/atmosphere is excellent. I'll sit there for 3 hours.

I eat out really local, within a three-mile radius of my Northwest Hills house... on Burnet Road alone: The Frisco, Waterloo Ice House, and Austin Diner for chicken fried steak.
I like to go to Frisco's on Tuesdays for the chicken and dumplings. I think they taste really good, but the dumplings seem more like thick noodles than dumplings. Dumplings as I know them are long and doughy and closer to the size of about a 1/3 of a regular sized biscuit than the size of a square-shaped thick noodle. Chicken and noodles might be a more accurate name. I've never complained because I do like the way they taste and I get them everytime I go there if it's Tuesday.

Frisco's breakfasts are pretty good, even if the potatoes do taste like they come out of a box. I think the grits might be instant. Often times they are too watery to be home made. The breakfasts are not cheap. 2 eggs, sausage, potatoes, toast, I think is right at $10.50, not including coffee, tax and tip.

Austin seems like it's lacking non-chain home cooking restaraunts that serves up a really good American/Southern style breakfast at a good price.

Frisco's still serves the tasty Top Chopped steak plate almost identical to the ones on the old Nighthawk menu in the 1960s. Of course instead of $2.95, the Texan size is now $13.99. But taking inflation into account, it is cheaper now.

Yup, we have become 'localized', as well. Within a half mile of our house:
- Waterloo Ice House
- Mangieri's Pizza
- Satellite Cafe
- Santa Rita
- The District

None of those would likely be places we would drive to go to specifically, but, as the kids have gotten older, it is nice to be able to walk to dinner and (more significantly) walk home afterward. It helps settle the meal nicely . And over time we have developed favorites at each place. It doesn't hurt that a Starbucks and Austin Scoops ice cream are in the same development.

When we went a couple of years ago, I thought Frisco was Austin Diner with a touch of attitude and one dollar added to each item. Sort of comparing 1431 Cafe to Jim's(or the former Egg & I to Waffle House). The Omeletry fell into the same category(at the old location)...did the new place ever open??

Never have eaten at a Jim's restaurant even though we've always heard they serve a good breakfast.

A new small TexMex restaurant opened in downtown Round Rock earlier this summer. Recuerdos is run by Edwardo who used to do the breakfasts for years at Enchiladas y Mas on Anderson Lane:

Recuerdos - Mexican Restaurant in Round Rock

The family used to be affiliated with the original Antonio's restaurant near Braker Lane & North Lamar in the 1970s & '80s.
Limited hours are on the website along with the menu. Good food & nice folks.

I highly recommend them, especially based on your previous post. They are based out of San Antonio, so practically local. Besides the southern style breakfasts, try the migas — they are my current favorite. The frontier burger is pretty good too. Everything costs much less than the typical Austin restaurant nowadays...

Yeah, Jim's is a standard for us Baby Boomers. They haven't changed the decor in forty years.

Migas... mmmm.

We drove by Jim's 183/McNeil/Spicewood Springs for years before finally stopping in. We were regulars when in that area for late breakfast/early lunch. Their lunch specials can't be beat IF you drink iced tea with your meal...the price includes tea and is very reasonable for an actual meal(Plenty of places are pushing three bucks for a beverage!). I do wish they would expand their sides; but I still think it's one of the best values around. They do have 'senior' specials; but they are a bit like Luby's in that you PAY less; but you GET less...portion controll, I reckon
