Progressives are quite frankly not my idea of go-to folk for advice on self-sustenance. They generally believe our government is responsible for taking care of people rather than us taking care of ourselves. Everyone likes to crack redneck jokes, but Southeners generally tend to have more of the type of skills that lead to successful self-sustenance (hunting, fishing, gardening, mechanical skills, etc).

City Data has a self-sustenance forum, OP. You will find a lot of people discussing these topics there.

If you're so nervous about WWIII, then I'd suggest you build yourself a bunker. If it happens, you won't have time to go anywhere. Your best bet is to hunker down for 6 months and wait until some of it settles down.

Why would anyone with knowledge of this and plans to be there tell a bunch of strangers on a public message board?

Lol, my thoughts exactly .

If I was somehow still alive, I know where I would go to that would allow me to potentially have food, water, and shelter, but I sure as hell ain't inviting strangers to join my family.....

Note that I would likely die of radiation sickness or whatever anyway, though.

I like your economically conservative and libertarian views on this.

(pretty much the way I view things politically & how I'd prefer my tax dollars be spent - or not spent. )

If WWlll breaks out, we will be screwed if someone decides to nuke Austin, or Fort Hood. There's really no way around it unless you build an underground bunker. But OTOH if war happens on the other side of the globe like it has been, then we'll likely be spared.

Note that I would likely die of radiation sickness or whatever anyway, though.

In our old Atlanta suburb mostly built in the '50s, many basements were retrofitted with "fallout shelters" made of solid cinder block, but with an open round the corner entryway. There was no 'roof' other than the floor of the room above.

Apparently, "they" thought the main challenge after an initial blast was literally the "fallout" of radiation...and it wouldn't find its way into the shelter(even with an open door).

I'm glad ours didn't get tested Made for an interesting conversation piece, however!
