We have only used cell phones since we moved to Austin in August. Now that we are finally settled in our house, I'm looking for a basic phone service land line that's cheap. Any recommendations?

If you plan to have broadband internet service at your home, you could subscribe to Vonage for $14.95 for 500 minutes. 800 calls are free.

if you have road runner and time warner cable, they also have digital phone, even in a bundle package. It's not the cheapest out there, but there is no limit on minutes and you can call anywhere in the US w/out long distance charge (which I enjoy). I think it is around $29.95, but it depends what other services you get.

Is there a particular reason you want a land line phone? Like for an alarm system or something? Otherwise, the broadband options (anywhere from Skype to Vonage to Digital phone with TWC) are best.

But why not just stick with the cell phones? I have my landline forwarded almost 100% of the time to my cell, and I basically only keep it because I've had the number so long.

I wanted to go with Skype, too, but their service for Macs isn't so great I hear. Also, my son had an emergency a couple weeks ago, and I had to call 911 for an ambulance. After that, I realized I was grateful that we have a landline.

Prices here are too high for this, though. We pay $27 (after taxes and fees) for a line and call waiting ONLY. No long distance or caller ID! Yikes.

Call AT&T and ask for "measured rate" service. The don't advertise it on their website, and I don't think you can even sign up for it online. When you call, they'll probably try to talk you into a different plan. The service itself is less than $10 a month, after taxes you'll probably still be under $15. You get unlimited incoming calls and a limited number of outgoing local calls, then additional calls are a few cents each.

I will be getting a landline also when I move there next month. I have a bundled service now here with , phone service, unlimited long distance and DSL, all for $100 a month. What will be my best option to get that kind of service in Austin?

Depending on where you are, if you can get Grande I think it is great and less expensive than the others!
