Do your children have any serious health problems because Dell is the best. I know for my grandchildren if something is serious they send them to Dell. And we live in Kyle about 10 minutes from San Marcos. San Marcos is a nice place and if you home school then schools don't matter. What is your degree going to be in that may make a difference where you go for a forever home. Good luck!

Agree with this.

Both towns are about 30-40% Hispanic & NB is about 15-20% multi-generational German American. So yes....both towns are diverse.

Austin has an absolutely incredible homeschooling community. Huge and very active. Back in the day AAH (Austin Area Homeschoolers) was a huge discussion list that was an amazing resource for countless activities, advice, anything you could want. I imagine it still is. I haven't seen anything close to it in DFW or in STL, MO where I now live. Living in San Marcos would put you closer to that than New Braunfels would, though it would still be an incredible haul.

I lived for awhile in Kyle, right off I35, and homeschooled my kids. They went to a co-op on 45th street (very close to Dell Children's Hospital), also right off I35, and when I picked them up in the afternoons it would take me literally two hours to go 10 miles on I35. On Fridays it would often take 3+. In the morning I had to give it 50 minutes to an hour. Really frustrating. But you could pick and choose times more carefully, hang out at the library while waiting for traffic to die down--though in Austin you would have to wait till 6:30 or 7:00!

We want to move back to Texas this coming year and our top pick was San Marcos, but a friend who lives in New Braunfels told us not to, not only because of the horrible public schools (our kids go to traditional school now) but also because of the high crime rate. Which is a shame, because I've always loved San Marcos.

I am not sure what you are majoring in, but if you are looking for a forever home you might look somewhere closer to Austin. And--just sayin'--I am a huge proponent of homeschooling and did it myself for 7 years but I ended up sending my kids to public school when my oldest went into 8th grade. I had planned to homeschool them the whole way through. I would say over half of homeschoolers end up sending their kids to traditional school by middle or high school. Not that the homeschooling was a "failture"--at least not in most cases--it's just situations change and what is best for your family sometimes changes, too. And as your kids get older it gets really, really intense and you really have to have the disposition for it as well as a continued lifestyle that can accommodate it. So with both of your kids still being under the age of 10, you might want to consider moving into an area that you would at least consider sending your kids to, should your situation change.
