We bought a house south off slaughter/mopac and this will be my first time ever living in south Austin. Been in Austin my whole life mainly north. How does everyone like it down here?

Good location. Some good eats, Alamo Drafthouse, good schools and lower crime than most other areas of Austin.

Good location. Lifetime Fitness is up the road from you, Whole Foods and other stores at Arbor Trails. Sunset Valley is up at Ben White. SouthPark Meadows is a few miles east of there. Between all that, the schools, low crime, good access to ABIA, hill country, I-35 south to SA, and copious amounts of green space, you're set.

I really enjoy living on this side of the river. It's clean, full of attractive neighborhoods, there are plenty of shopping and entertainment options, I find it pretty easy to get around without as much of the enormous traffic jams that people speak of, and it's very friendly, too. I recommend establishing driving habits based on traffic patterns whenever possible - it really can make a big difference in quality of life. At least that's been my experience. Welcome and glad you finally found your house!

Spent my whole life in N. Austin, then got married and moved south ~2004. Took a while to figure out the whole 71/Ben White/360/MoPac/290/Southwest Parkway area, but other than that, it isn't too bad . We live west of MoPac, which really isn't much other than a psychological barrier, but Escarpment Village and the HEB across the street are very convenient for just about everything. On the east side, the Randalls is pretty nice and we like Galaxy Cafe and Maudies on occasion.

If you live west of MoPac, it is easier to access downtown by going up Escarpment to Wm Cannon to 290 over to MoPac. I think most people east follow Brodie up to 290 then to MoPac. There is a TON of traffic heading up MoPac from CC/Meridian/etc, so I find it is almost always better to avoid it.

For non-commute traffic, you can do almost everything w/o dealing with much traffic, other than the slow-paced navigation of the Sunset Valley shopping Mecca (or nightmare). Wm Cannon has a lot of nice stuff off of it now, too. I almost never go north of 290 or east of Westgate for any 'errand' or weekend task anymore.
