Not rain for month, so cracks in back yard mud very deep. I put water hose, it just keeps drinking water and does not stop. Is there Texas legend about reaching down to shake hands with devil, reaching hand up to grab bad children? There is that which is infinite, no solid earth and no inhabitants in the black void, where evil was formed and emerged, one from whom a thousand mysteries proceeded.

Don't recall which author - Frank Doby, Elmore Leonard et al - told the tale in one of their novels about the robbers who were being chased by a posse when they decided to drop their loot down one of those large west Texas "drought cracks." Problem was, when they returned to retrieve it, the usual drought-buster rains had closed up the cracks so that there was no way to determine where to dig. Myth has it that the treasure (money, gold or whatever) is still out there waiting to be found.
