I haven't had to look for a room to rent for a few years.

It's absolutely mind numbing how many ads on CL are scammers asking for my personal information before I even see the unit. They are also using stock images for pictures and increasingly post phone numbers with out of town area codes.

I got off the phone with one guy who asked me a litany of questions... ranging from the make/model of my car to where I went to high school. He appeared to be collecting enough to build an identity theft profile.

Is there any better solution that y'all could suggest? I just need a nice 120-150sqft room in a house with 1-2 other roommates within a 15-20 mile radius of downtown. I have a dog and a good job. I'm in my mid 30's.

thanks

I've heard of a few of my friends rent a bedroom for a prolonged period of time from AirBnB. You might try some of those listings and see if there's an option for a longer term lease

You might check the student union at UT they used to have a bulletin board where people looking for roommates could connect.

A web search turned this up http://utexas.uloop.com/housing/index.php/roommates

Also you might try walking around inside some of the buildings on UT's campus. As a student (way back when) I remember seeing a lot of grad students posting asking for more adult/responsible/grad/professional type roommates for their home.

I used airbnb as a sublet in the past, but I recently used an apartment finder and had a good experience. She called me the same day I filled out the online application, then two days later we met and long story short, took me to a nice apartment, which I later signed a lease at. That may be another route to go (an apt finder).

That was my first thought. Many offering short stays are also happy to lease a room by the month at a monthly rate, or ever 3+ months. They don't have to pay the 15% hotel tax on a 30+ day lease.

Though ACL is coming up and most like to cash in on those 10 days. But I'd chk airbnb for sure.
