My husband and I are thinking of moving from Houston to Lake Travis. We would love to live on/near a lake and heard wonderful things about Lake Travis. Is the lake really clean? What color is it? We originally from upstate N.Y. and used to very nice lakes in the north and before we make the trip we wanted to know if the lake is really as nice as we've heard.

THANK YOU!!!

The lake is CLEAN, but it is not CLEAR . Actually, it is pretty clear compared to some areas. Anyway, the water is fine for swimming and the COA actually gets its water from just downstream of the lake. After a good rain, it will be pretty cloudy, though. Most Texas lakes really don't compete well with the northern lakes as far as water appearance goes, but they are waaaay ahead on temperature .

I was just going by what the LCRA said

Lake Travis
Normal Clarity: Clear to slightly off-color in upper sections

Lake Houston
Normal Clarity: Moderately turbid

You know, it's a pretty nice looking lake...But on the newsstories when they report on the cleanup days, the scuba divers say there is a lot of junk on the bottom. Lots of beer cans, etc...There is also a crashed cessna in there. But, not just picking on Travis. I bet there's not a Lake anywhere (maybe a few) that don't have something lurking underneath if there's lots of human traffic. Don't worry The divers pick up a lot of that trash.

as a lake travis resident i will vouch for the fact that travis is absolutely beautiful and very very clean. when others post that it can be cloudy after a good rain, i have to say that it is only cloudy after a rain upstream of biblical porportions ...as in 10 inches in a couple hours. \
I will admit that those cold northern waters are beautiful but just as in the winter when the air is crisp and you immediately notice how very clear the air is, same thing for the water, the colder the water temp, the more visibility.

Very clean and wonderful to swim. There are many good swimming/living areas all along the Colorado River, not just at Lake Travis, so there are a nice number of options.

The biggest problem with Lake Travis is the boat traffic. I'd personally hate to live on it full-time due to all the boat noise.

Yes, I agree. Travis isn't the only lake in the chain here. Canyon Lake is fast becoming Lake Travis Jr. The other ones are equally as nice, but much quieter. Although, on Travis, once you are away from the main body and start heading up towards Paleface Park and the river, it's much quieter. We actually went really far up the Lake where it narrows down quite a bit, and there are houses up that way, but virtually no boat traffic.
