Fairly new Texan, never been to Austin -- I am driving up from San Antonio to watch some NCAA basketball Friday.
Where is a good place to park cheap for all day?

And while I am at it, recommended lunch spots close?
Thanks.

Parking around UT is a PITA. You cannot park on campus without a permit/sticker, even on weekends. You can park on the street on Trinity (street) - which is metered until 6 p.m. There are several parking garages nearby and a day pass is $10 most of the time. They might raise prices for NCAA basketball - because UT is a money grabber for parking money.

Lots of places to eat nearby - though a bit far for most to walk from the Erwin Center. Student friendly eats on Guadalupe, and many just a bit down Red River. Brick Oven pizza, Moonshine Grill, etc.

Park for free at Hancock Center at Red River and E 41st St. Then take Cap Metro #10 bus down RR to the arena. Cost $1 each way.

That's a good idea.

You can plan your trip (find bus times) using this link: Capital Metro - Austin Public Transit

Are we sure some enterprising folks aren't going to try to make a buck on the parking there?...or is it far enough away?

Yeah, I don't know about Hancock Center parking. They have frequent security patrols and might be watching for that. We parked in one of the pay lots last time we went to the tournament.
For a lunch spot, I recommend Serrano's. it's a close walk and pretty good. Could be crowded, but with good timing it might not be too much of a wait.
