I saw this damn thing scurrying across my living room floor. Anybody know what it is? I thought it was a baby scorpion. I got scared half to death!

What in the heck is this?!-photo.jpg

It is an earwig, they are very common. Earwig - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm surprised you have never seen one before. Although most of them that I have seen are dark brown to black in color.

I think this is what I killed the other night with my broom. Had to hit it half a dozen times to kill it. I thought it was a baby scorpion at first too. Glad it wasn't. We've had a couple of scorpions already this year.

Do these things bite or sting humans?

I've never been bitten by one, but I never give one the chance. They are pretty easy to pick up with a wad of toilet paper or kleenex and dispose of it in the toilet. We find them in our house more often then any other insect. I do believe these guys do come in from the sewer connections, I often find them in our bath tub. They use their pincers to hold prey and for self defense.

For protection from predators, the species Doru taeniatum of earwigs can squirt foul-smelling yellow liquid in the form of jets from scent glands on the dorsal side of the third and fourth abdominal segment. It aims the discharges by revolving the abdomen, a maneuver that enables it simultaneously to use its pincers in defense.[22]
