So I've been nurturing a pecan tree I planted ten years ago, and finally, this year is a good one. While I was away, my neighbor witnessed an older Asian couple come into my yard (and many other yards too) and help themselves to all that were on the ground. She said they had bags full. The same thing happened the one other time I had a decent crop. I know some homeowners could care less about their pecans, but this really irks me. If I am not home to "defend my territory", what can I do? I don't think a little sign would dissuade anyone. Is this considered trespassing?

Actually, it might, it is worth a try.

I imagine Pecans are like any other "Fruit" from a tree.
If the tree is on your property, then any product of the tree belongs to you.

You have a right to prosecute anyone touching your nuts.

A "No Trespassing" sign would work and maybe a sign nailed onto the tree that says, "No Picking - off of the tree or on the ground" might work too.

That's just plain rude of those folks to do that without even asking. I would have come out of my house and raised holy hell with them.

If the nuts are on your property they are yours. Anyone entering you property is a trespasser and if they take the nuts they're a thief.

I would put up a small sign asking people to not trespass.

I find this annoying. My spouses family lives in AL and they have alot of mature/HUGE pecan trees. The people that ask if they can pick the pecans, my inlaws more than happily oblige on the condition that they get half of what is picked. That way the pecans are picked up and the people get free pecans. For them it is a win/win. (Ironically, you see alot of the same people selling them on the road or at a market). As for the people that don't ask, they run them off. Plus, they have some nosy neighbors who keep watch while they are gone....lol. I agree with everyone else, put a sign out...probably "no trespassing" would be the best. I would hope that would deter them.

I was gonna say put a neighbor that has nothing to do during the day on nut patrol. The sign I think would work also. maybe those folks just are not thinking about it. My grandfather used to pick them up at the gold range all the time..(he was friends with the owners)..now I have to buy them...

Post signs and maybe get a dog. If I caught them I would prosecute.

A neighbor on "nut patrol" - now that made me laugh!!! That could be used in more than one context, too!
