I have a prospective job lined up that is located near the junction of Interstates 75 and 285.

I'd like to live as close as possible to that location, given the extreme traffic congestion in the Atlanta area. Initially, I'd live in an apartment, until I get a better feel for the area, and maybe would buy a place later.

So, any suggestions about apartment living areas nearby? Eyeballing the map, I see that Smyrna is close by--is that a good place to live?

Thanks for any ideas!

I can't give you exact apartment names, but you shouldn't have any problems finding an apartment in that area. I used to own a condo right there and it's a decent area. If you like jogging or walking on a nice three mile trail then make sure you find your way to Cochran Shoals trail by the river (off Powers Ferry next to 285). I really miss that after moving across town.

Vinings is a hotspot and you might find that a desireable place to live, but some decent apartments are also to the east of 75 around Windy Hill Rd. (right on Windy Hill, right on Powers Ferry and then a mile or so down the road).

I've worked across the road from the Cumberland Mall since the fall of 2004, and my wife works right near the Paces Ferry/285 intersection, so I have some idea about the general area.

We lived in a rental house just off Atlanta road in Smyrna initially, and then looked at a lot of places (houses, though) in central and southern Smyrna as well as slightly further south in Mableton, and I think the central and southern parts of Smyrna are "better" than the northern part just based on gut feeling, but I suspect there are decent apartment complexes all around.

Folks here seem to have a skeptical view of Post apartment complexes, if that means anything. :-)

I think one is called Post Spring, on Spring Road off of Paces Ferry. It looks very nice but it does sit behind the highway. There are a lot of nice apartment complexes on Cumberland Parkway. Take 285 to Paces Ferry and make a left over the bridge, then a right onto Cumberland Pkwy at the Publix. Travel down until you see the complexes. You'll also eventually hit One Ivy Walk which is a beautiful live/work/play development with restaurants and upscale boutiques. So the area is very nice to live all around.

Even Atlantans who generally disparage Post properties usually make an exception for Post Riverside, 4403 Northside Pkwy 30327. Post Riverside conveniently blends retail and residences in a "town square" setting surrounded by woodlands. It is beautiful and the location is near your target area.

The Magnolia apartments are really nice on Cumberland Pkwy. Not near the highway. The pool looks very inviting. We lived in a sister complex in Durham, NC and it was superbly managed.
