Personal opinions from people who have actually lived there.

Semi remote, few job opportunities, save for Ft Huachuca. Mostly good weather at 4000' elevation, snow on rare occasions, summer monsoon sunsets can't be beat. Humidity during the monsoon season will have you thinking you are back in Georgia. Good hiking in the Huachuca's to the west (Miller Peak is 9400' with Aspen trees), and to the east the Chiricahua's. Nogales, Sonora MX is a couple of hours SW. Tucson is 90 miles NW. The San Pedro River corridor is a birders paradise, and a kayakers rush during the monsoon floods. Parker Lake on the west side of the Huachucas is good for swimming, canoeing. It's been 15 years, so I'm sure SV has grown and there are more consumer amenities.

It is remote, about 80 miles to Tucson, 3.5 hours to Phoenix, 4 hours to El Paso. Largest town in the county. The county is the size of Connecticut. Weather is generally 8 degrees cooler than Tucson. Not a lot of nightlife, if any. Very large LE presence, city, county, state and federal.

One of 2 counties in the state that has actually lost population. Lot's of retirees and snowbirds.

For us, the hardest thing to get used to was the wind. It's always breezy or windy.

I moved here from Columbia, SC. It's a good place to live, especially if you like the outdoors, but Augusta it's not. It is 1/4th the size of Augusta.

I worked at Fort Huachuca in the late 80's/early 90's, but lived in Tucson and commuted. I was single at the time and Sierra Vista wasn't where I wanted to be.

If you find the area too small, it's commutable from a suburb SE of Tucson called Vail, probably just under an hour each way, no traffic (unless things have changed drastically). There are probably vanpools now. We used to have busses and carpools.

The weather is even nicer than Tucson, in the summer they get a monsoon almost every afternoon. Dusting of snow once or twice each winter.

There are a lot of military retirees in SV and the town kind of revolves around the base. They have a small mall, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, etc.
