I currently live in Florence, OR....a small town on the coast. I love it here, but the lack of medical care is starting to scare me a bit. We have a small hospital, but the doctors keep leaving. The drive to Eugene at 60 miles is ok in the spring/summer, but can be scary dangerous and even at times impossible in the fall/winter.

So, I'm looking at a snow bird place in Arizona. Maybe eventually be my primary location.

However, it is overwhelming with all the locations. I could probably swing a home up to $250k. I would like to be in a 55+ community. I don't golf. I do hike. I have dogs.

I would like to be close to good medical facilities. Shopping is not a big deal but a good grocery store or two would be nice.

We recently spent a couple years and numerous visits to AZ looking at communities. In the Tucson area we liked Quail Creek and the economics of Green Valley. In the Phoenix area I would agree with wit-nit and thinkalot the original of all 55+ communities Sun City can be a great choice. Our preferred choices in the Phoenix area were all on the west side. There are numerous communities on the east side as well.

We also loved Sun City Grand. In the end we chose Sun City Festival. All of these communities can be investigated via the internet but I recommend a visit or two to the area to see the choices for yourself. I have written of our search in detail on these pages.

To get an overview of the entire state check out the web site 55places.com and go from there. Also find a good realtor who lives in a particular area. It doesn't cost you a dime to work with a buyers' agent and they can be extremely helpful.

Enjoy the search! We sure did.

This thread offers a very thorough review of many of the 55+ communities in the Phoenix area.
