Of course, AL would need to find other sources for revenue ( whole other topic), which I think is doable.

I'd move to Southern Alabama along the coast, but it would cost me $10,000+/yr in taxes versus Florida....so why?

I like Gulf Shores & Fair Hope, but I'm not paying $10,000/yr more to live there, versus Florida.

If I moved to AL, I'd pay $10k/yr in taxes x 10 more working years = $100,000 paid in taxes, that was not invested, so the real cost = ~$200,000.
Hmm. I live in what I consider a very nice home on the water in south Baldwin County. Our 2023 property taxes were only $5k. Not sure where you found the $10k/year number.

Probably referring to sales taxes.

Alabama has actually been good at attracting some big manufacturers to the state like Mercedes Benz, Hyundai, Mazda-Toyota, AirBus, ArcelorMittal Steel and others. I can't think of too many in the high tech field which are generally where high paying jobs are most often available.
Huntsville. But other than that, yeah.

And NASA. My cube mate, moved from Phoenix to work for NASA in Huntsville. He likes it a lot.
