The difference being is that in a college town, the institution dominates economically, socially and culturally as opposed to the type of town which has a college, but the college is not the main defining element. Examples: Auburn is a college town while Huntsville is a town with colleges. I'm considering moving to Ville from Decatur and want a sense of the vibe. Tia to all who reply.

Agree. But what about Tuscaloosa? College town or a town with a college? A town with 100,000 population, but 40,000 of those are students. It's probably best known for the university so maybe a college town.
