I know this is a little strange, but I'm only asking out of curiosity. When one brings up the state of North Carolina in Alabama, what comes to mind? Just in general, or specifically Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham, as well. Do y'all still see NC as southern? Thanks!

Yep. North Carolina is cool. It shows what happens when a Southern state actually invests in decent political leadership over the course of several decades.

Yes and no to it being southern. It feels more east coast to me. Spent a short time in NC in the Charlotte area. Very nice city. Probably the only "big city" I would consider living in. Awesome airport.

I think of it as southern. I think of it as a state that has many things going for it. I have family in Charlotte and have visited a few times and think that it is a cool city.

Yeah NC is southern, and its a state that Alabama should look to if it wants to be a major player in the region.

All - and I do mean ALL - my family lives in the northwestern part of the state, up in the mountains. Some of them are even more redneck than me! And a few have Ph.Ds.
But most of the NC people I meet are transplants from the north who are proud of that fact.

I guess you'd group it in with Virginia, then? What about South Carolina? Still southern or more east coast-ish?

Like Virginia, it depends on what area you're talking about.
South Carolina is still mostly Southern. It is seeing a lot of new people, though.

Yeah, but overall and I'm a native, I'd say NC and VA are pretty similar. SC is a little too Deep South, but there are still similarities drawn between the Carolina's. Actually, many people on CD compare NC to GA and I can see that a little.

Anyone believe Birmingham is similar to Charlotte or Raleigh/Durham? Possibly others?

We're not allowed to have such crazy thoughts.

They're the same but different.
