Autry Museum of Western Heritage


The Autry Museum of Western Heritage provides visitors a place to explore the life and perceptions of the diverse people of the American West; this is done through connecting the past and the present to inform people about their shared future. The museum is an intercultural center which celebrates the diversity and history of the American West.

At the museum there are plenty of exhibitions, public programs and student education services which examine the issues of contemporary society, offer insights into solutions and human conditions through the historical experience.

There are two main parts of the museum, the Museum of the American West which was established in 1988. This area has a collection of 21,000 paintings, sculptures, costumes, firearms, tools, toys, games and musical instruments. The Southwest Museum of the American Indian is the oldest museum in Los Angeles. There is a collection of 238,000 pieces in this museum that are al Native American art and artifacts such as baskets, ceramics, textiles and weavings. These pieces represent Indigenous people from Alaska to South America, with the main emphasis being on the cultures from California and the Southwestern US.

Dining at the museum is available at the Golden Spur Café; there is a wide selection of house-made entrees, salads and sandwiches along with hot special and a child friendly menu.

The museum also has the ability to host and cater for special events for groups of 30 to large groups of thousands on the four-acre lawn. The museum can organize furnishings, décor and entertainment for guest's events.
