Description: This is a family-owned and operated hotel right on the southern end of the tourist strip, at 16th Street. It opened in 1984 but was completely renovated in 2006. There are 56 rooms here running from the standard with a refrigerator, coffee maker, and two queen beds to efficiency suites that have a separate bedroom, living room, and kitchenettes. Rooms with king sized beds also have Jacuzzi tubs. Every room offers a private oceanfront balcony. A cafe serves breakfast and lunch here, and this is one of the places where smokers can find lodging. There are two wheelchair-accessible rooms; one is a suite. There’s an outdoor pool and free bicycles for guests to roam the Boardwalk.

Description: This is another of the smaller, locally owned Oceanfront hotels, with 59 rooms and private balconies overlooking the surf. There’s a range of rooms, from standard to king suites. The standard offers a pair of double beds, coffee maker, refrigerator, microwave, and free HBO and expanded cable for those rainy days. They also offer value weeks, with steep discounts on a limited number of rooms. You can find the weeks on the website. Just follow the directions there. Some rooms have whirlpool tubs, and there’s an indoor pool overlooking the ocean that’s heated in the winter. You can add extra guests to a room for $10 each per night.

Description: Marriott operates two courtyard inns at the Oceanfront. The Courtyard South has 141 rooms with either a pair of double beds or a single king. There are also suites. There’s no charge for extra residents. All rooms are oceanfront and all have private balconies. There’s an indoor pool and a whirlpool and some rooms are wheelchair-accessible. There’s a full restaurant here and free Wi-Fi. What sets it apart from its sibling is location. This Marriott is right in the middle of all the Oceanfront action.

Description: The other Courtyard is located at the calmer north end of the Boardwalk. There are 11 floors here with 100 rooms, each with an oceanfront balcony. The outdoor pool has a tropical theme and a tiki bar, open until 7 p.m., so you can relax with a drink by the pool. There’s also an indoor pool for the colder months. There’s a restaurant that serves breakfast and even room service for evening meals, which is rare in a Courtyard property. This facility was completely renovated in 2009.

Description: There are 56 rooms here, most with two double beds, and this is another of the rare places where smokers are still welcome. One room is handicapped accessible; all are oceanfront with private balconies or patios. A continental breakfast is included in the rate with the fixings to make your own waffles if you’re so inclined. The building opened in 1990, and there is a small indoor pool. There is also an indoor parking garage for the guests. There’s another Econo Lodge, a few blocks down at 2707 Atlantic Ave. (757-428-3970), called Econo Lodge on the Ocean. It’s a 38-bed, three story motel with no elevator, which also offers all oceanfront rooms and a continental breakfast. It has a heated outdoor pool and rooms for smokers.
