Shopping - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Shopping

Oklahoma City has been a shopping destination since people settled here after the Land Run of 1889. While shopping is spread across the city, there are a few general areas you will want to know about before you head out.

Located along Reno Avenue from I-44 west to Meridian, you will find a number of furniture stores, like Mathis Brothers, Bob Mills, and Lorec Ranch. At May Avenue and Northwest 10th and along Western Avenue from Northwest 36th to about Northwest 50th, antiques enthusiasts will discover clusters of antiques stores. If you are interested in going to one area to mall shop, get groceries, or find something for a baby shower, head to Northwest Expressway and Pennsylvania. There are two malls, numerous restaurants, and a Super Wal-Mart nestled close to each other. Along Classen Avenue and Northwest 23rd, you will find a number of good Asian food markets and on 23rd between Meridian and MacArthur, there are several Mexican food stores.

In this chapter I have included sections on antiques, bakeries, bookstores, specialty shops, and the most prominent malls in Oklahoma City. Of course not every shopping experience is covered here, but it’s a good place to start. As you venture out and about, you will find your favorite places to shop. Keep a list and when you get the chance, drop me a line so I can share them with others.

Shopping - The Arts

Oklahoma City has a wide and varied art scene. From its galleries to its wide array of festivals, there is something here for everyone to enjoy.

In this chapter you will find art galleries, such as the Red Earth Gallery which showcases Native American art. Also listed are several organizations, like the Oklahoma Arts Council and the Norman Arts and Humanities Council, that support artists in the community. If your interest lies in museums, by sure to check out the “Attractions” chapter. Museums listed there, like the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, offer art that will excite even the most amateur art lover.

Educational opportunities are available for those who would like to learn about a particular art. The City Arts Center offers classes on a regular basis for adults and children alike. If you are interested in pursuing more in-depth study, check out the University of Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University, and the University of Oklahoma. All offer strong art programs.

In this chapter, you will also find several of the larger art festivals listed. While these festivals are covered in the “Annual Events” chapter, they bear repeating here. Be sure to check the “Annual Events” chapter for other art festivals held throughout the year. Artists of all mediums turn out at these events to sell their wares or entertain. You can sit and listen to an artist perform, watch an artist create, or purchase a one-of-a-kind piece of art. At some festivals you may even get the opportunity to watch skilled craftspeople, like weavers, spinners, basket weavers, and potters, demonstrate their craft.

If you get tired of going to several different locations to experience and enjoy art, stop down at the Paseo Arts District. There are galleries, restaurants, and an annual arts festival to enjoy here.

Oklahoma City has several theaters that offer a variety of drama and visual art presentations. If your interests lie in music, you will not be disappointed by the offerings at the Civic Center Music Hall and at the Zoo Amphitheatre. With all the art that Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas have to offer, art lovers will be pleasantly surprised.
