Description: The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London is the smallest of the federal military academies. Admission is based solely on merit and does not require congressional recommendation, but competition is intense and only a select few are admitted. Character development, leadership, and physical fitness are all paramount in the educational philosophy of the academy. After graduation, officers give five years of service or more.
