I'm in western Oregon right now. I don't think you'll find more good looking young women in such high numbers as you see here. I'll put the place up for the Pepsi challenge against anywhere.... So Cal included.

Now, granted, if your idea of beauty is spackled on makeup and silicone, then, okay, I concede you'll do better in LA or Phoenix.

I'm thinking in town, or no more than 5 miles out. We've been looking at Powder Horn.

Also saw a few lots come up for sale in the south end of town.

I'm used to a 3 mile commute, so I'd like to stay close in. Also not big on wells and septic tanks.

Sheridan sounds like it has a lot to offer. We have a plumbing company and a small building company we are planning on relocating to Wyoming just not set on a place yet. The amount and lenght of demand are an important part of our decision. We had planned on Gillette. However after the visit not really what we expected and worried about the bust effect. We have 3 children we would like to move once and be one, A place were they can grow up and continue living in. Sports are very important to them. Wrestling, Football, Track, Cross Country and Swimming. Are these offered at the youth level in Sheridan? Also good schools is important. Our daughter would like to be a
Forensic Scientist. Which would require great schooling with lots of advance classes. She is in all advanced classes now in 9th grade. As long as we can get the business up and running in a fast pace and the town has the demand for us, along with all the childrens wishes filled we would consider almost anywere in Wyoming.

Our plumbing companies here in Sheridan, are busy, but not overwhelmed. Matter of fact they took on heating and air so they could keep busy.

Housing is going up, lots of houses being built but I really think we're at the top of the boom and she's getting ready to bust.

Reason I say that is we have a sawmill here in town that their main production is studs. The sell all over the place. Last week, they had 76 employee's. This week, they have 26 employees. They laid off 50 people. The reason they gave is that studs just aren't selling. The housing industry has got what they need and they're slowing down big time.

So I'm not sure that Sheridan would be a good choice right now.

Next spring, there's a developement going in with 200 homes. That, currently, is the only growth and developement being talked about. The company to do that is already set up.

Default Wyoming Fantasy.. just that.

Not to rain on the parade, but if you move to northeast Wyoming, especially Sheridan be sure to bring money and a reality check with you. Sure you can buy a lot at the Powder Horn, but better check into how much it costs to build on it, you are looking at easily 140-180 a sq ft. and I'm talking no basement, absolute total basics. Imagine a tract home in Charlotte that costs around 150K.. that's what you'll get out here. Granted the PH actually enforces convenants so you won't be living in a 400K home and having your neighbor's 1972 snowmobile that he's "sure gonna fix up one day.." or their gigantic shed that is bigger than their home..

If you buy an older home, expect to pay 220K plus for a home that in many areas would look like you were living in the "ghetto." Same goes for your neighbors thinking classy decorating is parking their hillbilly hotel (ak RV from 1955) in the middle of the street. also sellers are often Homeowners that haven't renovated since 1945.. or cleaned. And that's if you are lucky and they just kept the green shag rug, the other bad scenerio is if they tried to "update it themselves" oh let's say adding an addition where you can see an inch between the foundation and the ground.. or one of my favorites, using barbed wire in the attic to hang up electric wire. To give you some idea, a house that meets a first time homebuyer has to meet a basic inspection (ie. basic in most states) in the 145-170K range it is almost impossible to find a house that meets that and doesn't need 50K worth of work.. if you can find a contractor that will bother.

Stay at home moms, there are plenty of those, but most of us aren't sure how they do it when most homes cost 280K plus, groceries are more expensive, gas is more expensive, beer, everything. I think you are going to have sticker shock when you get here. Most of the stay at home moms I know either are with husbands in CBM field, they bought their homes 5 years ago, or they are 18, single and on welfare or they brought A LOT of money with them. Oh and check into how much it costs to fly out of here.. hope you like cold weather.. we DO actually have cold weather from October until May. Yes there are maybe a few days that are nice in there.. but do you like wet? it's wet a lot. And it's not lovely colorado snow.. or Ashville NC lovely.. it's dreary wet icy.

The Wyoming of "good jobs for god-fearing simple people that just want to make a living and enjoy the outdoors." always makes me laugh. Sure, this is a great town for the blue collar workers. However I truly believe what is considered the middle class is what areas in the northeast and south would consider lower class. I hate to say this, but I've been around boom towns before and you get a lot of other states "trash" so to speak.

I think the schools are good enough, I personally am horrified by the grammar of some of the teachers - and most students aren't going to graduate competitvely enough to go out of state, but you don't have I think the issues such as materialistic competiveness that you do in other areas. However, I always have a good giggle at the "I'm just a poor rancher's kid" that rodeo's with a 20K horse trailer, 2 horses, 3 saddles, travel expenses, etc. etc.

On the good side, no traffic, nice view (but you can't eat the scenery) not much crime.

I personally am just not into Nascar, sheds, wearing my baseball cap to dinner, Cadillac Escalades, New money, bass boats, etc.

to give you a good example, I was at an event once when this woman was pitying me for living "in town" when she lived more near the mountain, then she goes on and on about how she finds everyone so friendly and they've been invited to sooo many parties.. frankly it was irritating and she was putting on airs.. This is someone who is wearing a denim vest and kitty print sweatshirt while her husband is attired in a Harley Davidson sweatshirt "classy".. so I asked her where she was from.. suprise, she was from where I was out of state. When I asked her what part of town she was from there.. she told me, then I told her what part of town I was from.. Let's put it this way there she'd be hillbilly trash. Here she holds her pinky out.. Needless to say though she backed off quickly and stop putting on airs.

but good luck to you..

Dictionary,

It sounds as if you're a young person in redneck denial.

Yes, I know housing in Charlotte is cheap.

I've lived a good chunk of my life west of the Rockies, and there's no free lunch out here.

Default Moving in June 2009(hopefully)

I will be moving from FL. My soon-to-be-ex and I were foreclosed on in late 2007. Needless to say my credit sucks right now, Ah the joy of homeowner, flood, and wind insurance. And an adjustable rate. So I am not one of the ones who can just go get a loan for a house. I never used my Veterans home loan option, we used his for our house. I will end up paying the highest amount for a deposit anywhere we move to. Right now I am a custodian at an elementary school making $9.30 an hour(equalized). So I worry about being able to find a job there making enough to be able to support myself and my three kids. I am going to college for an AS in Office Management but I won't have the degree when we move. I am taking all the computer classes I think I will need so I can get an office job when I get there. I was a food service specialist in the Army, 1993-1994. Thanks everyone for all the info. it helps alot. I am trying to do this move the smart way. Find out all I can and be as informed as I can be about the realities of Wyoming. LOL hey this is my dream.

We moved here from Denver 4 years ago. As one of the least windy towns in Wyoming; This is a blessed place and each day I'm happier we relocated to this area.
We are 125 miles from Billings, Mt, and 150 or so from Casper, Wy.
I don't feel isolated; maybe isolation with dsl internet and cable tv is relative. If I want to go to a sports activity it would take a 7 hour drive or so to Denver. So what?
My teenagers don't like it here; one of the reasons we moved was to steer the two boys from the gangs and crime of Denver.
Sheridan is more integral to Montana than wyoming, climate wise.
If you like history and enjoy an older town feeling, this is it.
There is a large, well attended retirement contingent in this community with great golf.
I hope to retire here!

you made a great choice! Sheridan is a great town with GREAT people. Many have lived here all of their lives. Many new housing developments in town that would satisfy your needs, plus lots of older stuff on the market, crime is low, Thanks to our great police department, which are really short handed but still do a great job, we have implimented a take your police car home policy for quicker reponse that only used to be seen in much smaller towns. Good to see a cop car 2 houses down ? Wave at him when I see him working in the yard regular guy doing an outstanding job. Like his old jeep too. Come on you"ll love it here.
