We would like to stay in Vancouver during the summer. But I'm concerned about what I'm reading regarding the government trying to shut down vacation rentals. I read a warning that if coming from the United States for example, and we put down a deposit, then we might not be able to rent or get our deposit back. Would like an update on this situation.

Yes, there is some risk of that if the owners are not in compliance and get caught just before you are due to stay there. Resort communities are exempt, so you are safe to stay at one of those, or a hotel/motel. For us Vancouver is just a 2 hour drive so we go often, even just for the day sometimes. There are some really nice resorts for summer activities such as in Whistler, but for Vancouver/Granville we stay at motels.
